I am using a Rutx50, firmware RUTX_R_00.07.18.3. Internet is from Mobile and at least once a day DNS stops working. I am only using the servers from the mob interface. Tried using other servers like Cloudflare and Google, same issue.
Internet status on overview shows DNS not working if that issue arrises. If I change something on the DNS page, like toggle rebind protection, it starts working again.
Is it possible that the DNS service tends to crash somehow? It has been like that for a few firmware versions, I think.
Any ideas or solutions?
Hello, @Tarr3128,
Thank you for reaching out and for providing details about the issue.
To help us narrow this down, could you please clarify the following:
- How many devices are affected by this behavior?
- Does the issue occur consistently or intermittently?
- Have you already tried upgrading to the latest available firmware?
According to the firmware changelogs, several DNS-related improvements and fixes were introduced starting from firmware version 07.19. Based on this, I would recommend the following troubleshooting steps:
- Upgrade the device to the latest available firmware and verify whether the issue still persists after the upgrade.
- Test with a different SIM card/provider, if possible. This will help determine whether the issue may be related to the DNS servers provided by the mobile operator.
- Verify DNS resolution behavior:
- Try pinging a public IP address (e.g.,
8.8.8.8) and then a domain name (e.g., google.com) to confirm whether connectivity works while DNS resolution fails.
- Review system logs (
logread) around the time the issue occurs to see if there are any DNS- or network-related error messages that could provide additional insight.
You can download the latest firmware from the following page:

Please let me know the results of these tests, and feel free to share any relevant observations or logs. This will help us investigate the issue further in a more targeted way.
Warm regards,
V.
This happens semi regularly, once a day, sometimes it takes two days. Event log says DNS resolution starts to fall. It happens both with my German o2 SIM while roaming and with a movistar Spanish SIM. Maybe it just happens with movistar, as the o2 SIM uses that while roaming as well. I have no way to test that. I also just have one device.
IP connection seems to work still. It is just the resolver that stops working till restarted with a config change.
To be honest I am a bit reluctant to move away from the stable version as I need that router working and I am not sure about the stability of the latest firmware.
Hello,
I hope this message finds you well.
Before upgrading to the latest firmware version, you can create a configuration backup for safety. To do so, please navigate to System → Maintenance → Backup and download the backup archive.
Once the backup is saved, I would recommend upgrading the firmware without keeping the current settings and then testing the behavior again. During testing, please monitor the system logs closely to see whether any error messages appear or if there are entries that might indicate why the DNS resolver stops working. If possible, you may also share any relevant, depersonalized log entries for further analysis.
If the newer firmware version does not resolve the issue, you can always downgrade back to your current firmware and restore the router’s configuration by uploading the previously saved backup file.
Please let me know how it goes or if you need any assistance during the process.
Warm regards,
V.
