DHCP client hidden / no longer selectable (TRB245)

Hello

May I’m overlooking something here. Until a few versions ago, it was straight-forward to use the DHCP client on the LAN interface. I’ve tested this today with a 00.07.04.1: it is working as expected.

However, after an update to 00.07.10.2 dhcp is no longer selectable, only none or static. There’s a warning that the DHCP server cannot operate without a static IP. But that DHCP server is switched off for both, IPv4 and IPv6.
And there’s a potential danger that if I do not pay enough attention, the interface is switched off by accident and I will lose any setup.

What is the meaning behind this behaviour, and how can I get the DHCP setting back?

Regards,

Martin

Hello,

To configure the DHCP server for the LAN interface, navigate to Network → DHCP in the WebUI. You can find more detailed information on our wiki page here: TRB245 DHCP - Teltonika Networks Wiki.

Hello Marija

Thank you for your hint.

You are referring to the DHCP server settings while I’m having trouble to select the DHCP client.

I’ve swiched both, the IPv6 and IPv4 DHCP servers to off. Even though, I cannot select the DHCP client mode in the lan settings. It just does not appear in the ‘protocol’ menue.

Martin

Hello,

On the LAN side, it is only possible to configure DHCP for TRB245 clients (DHCP server). If you want your TRB245 to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server (as a client), please refer to the WAN configuration section, where you can select the DHCP protocol for the WAN IP.

Best regards,

Hello Marija

Does this make sense?
It used to be possible to run a DHCP client on the LAN interface until one of the latest versions.
And thus, a simple update bears the very high risk of turning the unit useless.
I really urge you, please, reconsider that development move.

Do I need to somehow move the physical interface to the WAN section first? And how?

Regards,

Martin

The DHCP client option was removed from the LAN interface in firmware version 7.5 because LAN interfaces share the internet connection, rather than receive it. To use DHCP for internet access, it should be configured on the WAN interface.

I hope this clarifies things.

Hello Marija

Ok, I understand. But it is not at all obvious how to accomplish that:

  • Add a new interface (e.g. wan1)
  • Go to ‘Physical Settings’ and tie it to br-lan(eth0)

This is working but why is the old configuration not migrated? The risk for a client to acidentally lock out the device is imminent.

Thank you for all your help. Lesson learned.

Regards,

Martin

Sorry for any inconvenience, but it seems there is an issue with the migration. Our developers are aware of the problem and are actively working on resolving it. I will update you as soon as I receive any feedback regarding this matter.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Best regards,
