Hi,
I’m new to Teltonika RMS, but have used several other brands equivalents. I can’t find out how to do some things to configure a TRB142 gateway using RMS (the device’s web interface is more intuitive to me, but I want to be be able to automate configuration to multiple devices). I’ll number the questions to make it easier to refer to them:
Can the presently used APN be displayed using RMS?
How to I set a private APN using RMS? I can find the APN database, and see where to add a single entry, but this asks various additional questions such as operator and country code which are not usually needed with a private APN. I’m using roaming SIMs, so if this is the right section to modify I assume I’d need to use the home network details?
Is it possible to import a configuration profile from a previously defined device, then apply it using RMS?
Can configuration profiles still be used when firmware changes?
In our application I need the device to respond to AT commands over the serial port. Can AT commands be sent using RMS? In an automated way?
I notice that the gateway continuously reports “+QCSQ: “LTE”,76,-108,132,-15” over its serial port, is there a way to stop that? It may upset the device we’re connecting to the gateway.
Is there a need to use AT+CGDCONT to establish an external PDP context as we usually do with modems, or will it establish a connection anyway? (Can this be done through RMS?)
Does the modem respond to PPP commands over the serial port?
Best Wishes,
A
Thank you for your questions! Please find the responses below:
Yes, the currently used APN can be viewed in RMS by following these steps: select the Device → Configure device (cogwheel) → Interfaces → Create/Update → Get Configurations from device.
To set a private APN, navigate to the same Interfaces field, select Update, and specify the mobile interface name for the APN change (e.g., mob1s1a1). In General settings, specify the same name, enable the interface, set the protocol to Mobile, mode to NAT, select the PDP type, SIM slot, turn off Auto APN, and enter your private APN.
When updating firmware through RMS, configurations can remain unchanged by selecting the “Keep all settings after firmware update” option.
Could you clarify which AT commands you’d like to send? You can send AT commands to the device via the RMS Task Manager using gsmctl -A. Further details on RMS Task Manager are available here: RMS Task Manager.
To stop the modem from continuously sending signal query messages, you can use the AT+QCSQ=0 command.
In Partial Control modem mode, there’s no need to use AT+CGDCONT, as the modem will automatically establish the connection.
Could you clarify which PPP commands you’re referring to?
Hi Martynas,
Thank you for this prompt and helpful reply. Making setting changes seems a bit more complex in RMS than in similar products from other brands that I’ve used before, and some assistance getting started is much appreciated, and finding where settings are.
2) Is there any way to specify multiple APNs so that the SIM could be swapped to one from another provider whilst maintaining connectivity?
3) Can a configuration profile be generated from a router that was configured using its local or remote web interface rather than RMS? When making changes using RMS do all of the changes have to made in one go, or can additional changes be added to saved profiles? Can tags or groups be applied so that particular profiles can be applied to particular routers automatically? I can see how to apply them manually. Are profiles continually checked to make sure no settings differ on the device, or is it a one-off configuration when the profile is applied? Can profiles be compared as with systems from other brands?
4) How well does the system deal with changes in setting options if they differ between firmware versions? Some systems I’ve used highlight changes.
5) I’m still determining which may be needed for this product and application, but usually things such as whether the serial terminal echos AT commands, the baud rate, verbose responses, flow control, remote AT commands (don’t know whether these products support this, but they may be less necessary with RMS anyway). I’ll read that link.
6) Thank you.
7) How is the Modem Control mode set? I might need the modem to not automatically establish the connection because the device we connect initiates that.
8) The device we want to connect uses PPP to control the data session-the IP software stack used is in the connected device, not the modem. I don’t know all the commands though.

Thank you for your questions. Here are responses to help clarify them:
Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to specify multiple APNs to automatically switch providers; you’ll need to configure the APN manually as outlined previously.
Yes, a configuration or backup file can be generated and downloaded directly from the WebUI under System → Maintenance → Backup.
When making configuration changes via RMS, these don’t have to be done all at once; you can adjust the device settings as needed, over multiple sessions.
Tags can be created and applied to specific devices within your profile, though this is done manually. For more on creating tags, see: How to create a tag in RMS.
Configuration profiles remain synchronized and consistent but are specific to Teltonika devices. Backup profiles from third-party systems cannot be uploaded or compared.
While it’s recommended (though not required) to keep devices on the latest firmware version within RMS, the system generally handles configuration profile updates across different firmware versions without issue.
Modem Control mode can be set to either Partial or Full Control. You can access this in the WebUI under Services → Serial Utilities → Modem Control or in RMS by navigating to Device → Configure Device → Services → Modem Control.
Please feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance.
Hi Martynas,
Thank you again for the clarifications. A few more responses/points please:
2) OK.
3) Do the configurations just store what’s changed from the defaults, or all the settings?
Do additional changes to the configuration get stored in subsequent saved profile when that’s saved?
I wasn’t suggesting that RMS could manage other brand’s products (of course not!), just saying that the remote management systems from other brands include particular functionality and seeing if Teltonika RMS does too. Can one saved RMS configuration profile be compared with another? I know I could do that manually by exporting the .xml files and using a diff program, eg in a good text editor.
To apply different profiles to different devices would I have to select them manually in the devices list each time? Other brands remote management systems allow particular profiles to be linked to devices in particular groups - I’m trying to find out if that functionality exists in Teltonika RMS.
4) That’s encouraging, thank you.
5) Where can I read about the differences between these two modes to determine which is best for this application?

Apologies for the confusion – I was referring to backup/configuration files. Configuration profiles specifically store only the changes made to specific settings rather than the entire configuration.
For comparing different configuration profiles, you can use tools like WinMerge or any similar program.
To apply different profiles to different devices, you’ll need to manually select each device you want to configure.
You can find detailed information about the differences between the two modem control modes on this wiki page: Modem Control Modes.
