Can't reach OpenVPN server via ethernet or wifi connection

Hello!

I have a working OpenVPN server. My RUT241 successfully connects itself to it via 4G internet (SIM) and it works without any problem.

However, things change when I try to “exit” via ethernet (WAN) or WiFi, disabling the mobile interface (it’s a test for a configuration where there is already internet).

I tried WiFi on a RUT241 and with Ethernet with a RUT240. The following is valid for both of my tests.

With the RUT240 connected to the internet (on the WAN port) I can successfully ping google, and even the public IP of my OpenVPN server. However, when I try to connect as a OpenVPN Client, it says TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds (check your network connectivity)

I don’t understand why I can ping it but cannot connect to it.

Hello,

Please remember that OpenVPN can only work if the device has a public IP address.

Below are the ranges of NAT/CG-NAT IP addresses that are classified as private and cannot be used for OpenVPN:
Private IP addresses:

  • 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (Total Addresses: 16,777,216)
  • 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (Total Addresses: 1,048,576)
  • 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (Total Addresses: 65,536)

CG-NAT IP addresses:

  • 100.64.0.0 - 100.127.255.255 (Total Addresses: 4,194,305)

Best regards,

Hi, thank you for your answer.

The same RUT240 works with my home ethernet. It didn’t at first, but after a couple minutes it started connecting to the server.

My work connection goes on internet with an IP which should be valid (it’s not in the ranges you specified) so I don’t think this should be a problem.

Is there something that I can check?

Hello,

Thank you for the information.

Could you please verify if everything is set up correctly in the configuration? For example, this error may occur if the client configuration doesn’t have the correct server address.

If everything seems correct, could you kindly share the configurations from both the RUT240 and RUT241 here?

Best regards,

I can’t share it now as the routers are used in other tests but I’ll check as soon as possible.

The server address should be correct as the RUT240 connects correctly, using my home network.
