Best practice for configuration using the CLI?

A Teltonika beginner question that I’m hoping someone can help with, please.

Is it considered good practice to make a configuration change via the CLI when the WebUI does not expose that particular parameter?

For example, the RutOS WebUI does not appear to provide any way to tune the OSPF SPF timers (DELAY, INITIAL-HOLDTIME and MAX-HOLDTIME).

As I understand it, RutOS is based on OpenWrt, and OpenWrt uses FRR for dynamic routing. FRR supports the following OSPF command:

router ospf
timers throttle spf 50 200 5000

Would it be safe/recommended to configure this using vtysh on a RUTM08?

More specifically, will the configuration survive a reboot and subsequent “Save & Apply” operations in the RutOS WebUI, or could RutOS overwrite/remove the manually configured FRR setting? Any potential issues after firmware updates?

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has actually used vtysh to configure OSPF parameters that aren’t exposed in the RutOS WebUI.

Thanks for your time.

Greetings,

Thank you for reaching out!

Executing commands directly in vtysh is safe for temporary real-time testing, but any custom settings applied will not survive a reboot or a “Save & Apply” in the WebUI. As a workaround, you can create a custom startup script to re-apply the configuration automatically at boot.

This custom script can also be uploaded directly via the WebUI by navigating to System → Maintenance → Custom Scripts. Keep in mind that since these commands are specific to vtysh, the script must execute them inside the vtysh terminal session.

If you run into any issues or have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Best regards,
Martyna
