5G low download speed with RUTX50 adn 2x MIMO

Can you please advise. I have 5G Telia SIM, RUTX50, directional 2xMIMO antenna that is on my roof pointing to the Tower. For some reason I am getting only 80-90 mbps speed which for 5G is unacceptable. Am I missing something in settings? (Default settings at the moment). Also I see in mobile network settings 100MHz Bandwidth (5G N78) that has poor signal, is it because of this maybe? I used https://www.cellmapper.net/ but all Telia cell towers around do not have 100 MHz bandwidth (in Klaipeda Tauralaukis region). Please advise. Many thanks

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out!

Based on the information you’ve provided, the SINR value for both N78 and B28 bands is showing as 0, which suggests that the tower cells are quite far away, resulting in moderate interference and noise along the signal path. This could be a key reason why you’re experiencing slower speeds than expected.

Please ensure that your antennas are properly screwed in and securely positioned, as loose or misaligned antennas can negatively impact signal quality.

For testing purposes, you can also try switching to 4G only mode in the Network → Mobile → Connection Settings, which teoretically should not improve the situation, but it helps to see if there’s any slight difference using LTE bands with carrier aggregation only.

Could you also provide a full screenshot from the Status → Network page? Please ensure that any private or sensitive information, such as IMSI numbers or public IP addresses, is hidden for privacy.

Additionally, I believe this 5G/LTE mobile connection quality map here could provide some useful insights regarding network conditions in your region.

Best regards,

Thank you for prompt reply. I tried to set as only 4G and it even worse with mbps. Maybe I should concentrate on frequencies of the actual tower my antennas are pointing to? I could maybe try do manual Band selection? I also tried to switch around antenna inputs so at the moment MIMO antennas are to antenna 1 and antenna 4 ports, middle two with small antennas. Antennas are properly screwed. I am not sure on witch Band I should concentrate as when I move around MIMO antenna on ports it makes different on different Band RSRP, but speedwise it does not make much difference tbh. On the 5G/LTE map I am in green 5G area.
I attach my area location circled in red and the tower that antennas are pointing to. And as you have asked full screenshot for status.

Thanks in advance

Hello,
Can you show how antennas are screwed on RUTX50? Have you tried to perform testings with standard antennas (outside the building)?

Hello, I guess you want to see if antennas are properly screwed on, but I asure you it is and np I will provide with some pictures. So today did some testing with original antennas inside and outside the house, also screenshots with swapping around MIMO connections. See screenshots below. By the way, with my Samsung S20 FE 5G, just sitting in the room I get 200 mbps in speedtest, so don’t get it why same provider in same room in this router gives me only 80 mbps…Maybe android inflates this number?

I wouldn’t compare RUTX50 and phone regarding speeds, because modem is different, antennas are different etc.

And what about speeds with original antennas and outside the house?

Also, it’s not good to have mixup of antennas. As I see in the photo, you are using 2 standard antennas and other connectors are from 2xMIMO antenna. This could be the reason of speed loss.

I asked ChatGPT about your setup, so indded, antennas configuration could have significant impact for X50 speeds.

The reduced speed you’re experiencing is likely due to how MIMO technology works and how your antenna setup is affecting it. Here’s a breakdown of the reasons:

1. MIMO Imbalance

The RUTX50 uses 4x4 MIMO to achieve higher speeds by receiving multiple data streams simultaneously. When you mix two standard antennas with a 2x2 MIMO directional setup, you’re essentially creating an imbalance in how the router processes signals. Two streams might be strong (from the directional antenna), while the other two are weaker or inconsistent (from the standard antennas). This disrupts MIMO performance and reduces speed.

2. Signal Phase and Interference

MIMO requires antennas to capture signals with distinct spatial characteristics. When you combine omnidirectional and directional antennas, the phase relationship between signals might get distorted. Directional antennas pick up strong signals from one direction, while omnidirectional antennas receive signals from multiple directions, including interference and noise.

Thanks for the info. With original antennas speed was at that time around 60-80 mbps inside or outside the house. So since antenna mixed up is not good, I have removed original antennas and left only directional and so far I get best result 90-100 mbps.

But your directional one have only 2 connectors and for full performance you need 4 of them

I am from LT too and also own rutx50 but a previuos generation (silver colour housing) and have been through all of this signal nightmare before. Still have some questions speeds related.
There are so many factors involved its just takes too much time to write and list here.
If you can contact me in private we can discuss more about it on the phone later

Hi @Zavista ,

This issue could also be caused by congestion on the lower frequency bands. Could you try locking the device to use Band 7 as the primary by sending the following command in System → Maintenance → Troubleshoot → Modem debug:

AT+QNWLOCK="common/4g",1,3050,289

Where:
3050 - LTE B7 EARFCN;
289 - B7 cell ID;
All other bands should still remain as secondary. Keep in mind, that this command only works until the next modem reboot, but if this helps with speeds we can try automating it to be applied on each modem reboot.

@Danas.V apologies, I see we missed your last thread, if you have any remaining questions, feel free to post them here.

Thanks I will try it out, also planning to take router to my frieds location more downtown, maybe it is my location that is a problem…hope to give some feedback by the end of the week.
@Danas.V cannot see an option to send you private message

Can’t see this option either
Well if you’ll find a time reply me to buffalo4x4drive@gmail.com

Somebody in this thread suggested your external antennas could be case…
Nonsense. If supplier can confirn antennas meet the spec so would look for something else. I had pretty much the same external antenna settup before and managed to get 840mbps download and 160mbps upload.
Router 1 and 4 antenna ports are the main ones so I plugged external antennas to these ports.
2 and 3 ports were used with indoor antennas.

I do not get those download/upload numbers now unfortunately even my antenna setup is better than prior. Router receives very stable strong signals. But I have slower 550 download speed now. Upload however is up to about 160mbps but fluctuating and I am not sure whether its a tower or rutx50 firmware problem. Can be a router and I will explain why.
Telia says a tower I am connected to is very loaded and they are surprised I still get speeds what I get.

I am surprised as well especially about the upload speed reaching 160 and gradually droping to 20 during a test thinking this can be router related problem.
I did not have upload issues when a router was running on older firmware version 7.04****
Most of the time upload was stable not fluctuating.
Once a new version 7.05**** was released with improved WebUi I have upload unstable.
But most important thing - unstable gradually dropping upload occurs if speed test is performed PC connected via ethernet cable. It happens if laptop is plugged in as well.
No upload gradually dropping speed if client connected via Wifi

This kind of antennas setup (the one which Zavista have) is not a nonsense, it’s not good when have mix of different antennas.

For your problem - did you try 7.12.3 firmware?

I tried many things

Please, can you support your statement antennas are not good?

I can support mine based on my own experience having very similar settup as Zavista has now.

This is what I have now.
I discussed with a big antenna supplier if my settup is correct and will not cause signal interferences and connection quality. They said no. Those guys are not jokers they specialise in radio frequencies and they do get in contact with Teltonika.

Signal quality with current setup
RSSI -28 - 35

Poor signal reception can be caused by many factors. External antenna cable quality and length is extremely important.

So I took my router and traveled to other town, with original antennas I am getting nearly 500 mbps download speeds inside the house with two bars signal strength out of 3. So I guess its my location…even tho Telia claims I should have decent speeds. I will try to call Telia on Monday and talk to tech. support, willl update on this
