I have a RUTX50 and although it has 2 SIM slots, of course it only has one modem so can only utilise one SIM at a time.
I have a situation whereby I need to be able to load balance across 2 SIMs from different mobile networks simultaneously.
My idea is to purchase a RUT241 and use that for the second SIM and connect the RUT241 to the WAN port of the RUTX50. I can then use the load balancing functionality of the RUTX50 as it will simply see the second SIM in the RUT241 as a WAN connection.
What are your thoughts about this design? Do you think that it will work and are there things I should consider in the configuration?
You are correct, the Load Balancing function can only work between two active interfaces. Since the RUTX50 has a single modem, it is not possible to achieve load balancing between the SIMs. However, you could use a wired WAN connection (for example, getting internet from the RUT241) along with the SIM inside the RUTX50.
The only device that can load balance connections between two SIMs is the RUTX12, which has two integrated modems, allowing both interfaces to be active simultaneously.
Please let me know if you have any further questions!
Thanks Marija, yes that is my idea to connect the RUT241 to the WAN port of the RUTX50. It is good that you think this solution will work. Any tips on how to configure the WAN interface to work with the RUT241?
To configure this setup, you can simply connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN port of your RUT241 to the WAN port of your RUTX50. This configuration allows your RUTX50 to access the internet using its SIM and also through the RUT241.
I recommend checking our wiki for configuration examples and detailed information about both devices:
