12v adaptor and PoE

I suggested some products for a friend who has a canal boat and wanted great internet
speed and wifi so he bought a TSW100 5-Port Unmanaged Gigabit PoE+ Switch (120W) and a Teltonika TRB500 4G LTE/5G Router along with a couple of access points and some 12v car style power adaptors.

The router and switch both work fine on the 12v adaptors but the switch doesn’t provide PoE when using the 12 adaptor so the access points don’t turn on.

I realise this is likely me being dumb and not realising the switch can’t step the 12v up to 48v or whatever is needed and that’s what the normal power adaptor does.

My friend wants to get as much as possible working off the 12v supply rather than via a mains inverter. My question is, is there a switch that can do PoE off 12v via an internal power supply?

Many thanks
Chris

Hello Chris,

The only switch that can provide PoE+ while being powered by a 12V or 24V battery without requiring an additional PSU is the TSW101.

However, please note:

  • Total PoE Power Budget (at PSE): 60W
  • Max PoE Power per Port: 30W

This means that if your PoE devices require 30W each, you will only be able to power two devices simultaneously.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Best regards,

Thank you very much. I almost bought the right product :joy:

I bought a TSW101 but the PR2AM20M cable does not fit. How are you supposed to power this thing?

I’m not an electrician. I just want to buy a power cable that works. Nothing listed says it’s compatible with TSW101 that I can find.

Hello,

Your PR2AM20M automotive power supply adapter has a 4-pin output connector, which is not directly compatible with the TSW101. However, you can modify it by cutting the cable to separate the + (positive) and - (negative) wires and then using them to power the TSW101.

Please note that this power adapter supports up to 2 A current, meaning the maximum power it can supply is 24 W if your battery voltage is 12 V. Furthermore, it is always recommended to power the TSW101 directly from the car battery for optimal performance.

Additionally, could you clarify what type and quantity of devices you want to power up through PoE+?
