I am evaluating a RUT241 and have experienced poor network performance compared to other similar devices and would like some ideas and feedback on how to get the most out of the device.
Currently I am averaging between 3Mb/s and 14Mb/s download using the on-device speedtest app and a Telus 5G enabled SIM. I understand that the RUT241 uses a Quectel EC25-AF which is only capable of a single channel 20Mhz - but that is still theoretically capable of 150Mb/s down with an expected +50Mb/s in the field.
Firmware: RUT2M_R_00.07.17.4 (Device updated as of 9/18/2025)
As for signal, I have “full bars” on the front page, but the details tell a different story:
RSSI (dBm): -65 (Good)
RSRP: -98 (fair to poor)
RSRQ: -13 (Good)
SINR: 14 (Good)
How can I improve the RSRP and SINR?
For context, I compared using a number of different devices, using the same SIM and placing them generally in the same location in my office window. None of the comparison devices have the external antenna arrays though, so I was surprised by the results:
“4G LTE MIFI Router MF925” averaged around 20Mb/s download.
“ZTE pocket station” averaged around 35Mb/s download.
“Google Pixel 4” averaged around 90Mb/s download.
“Vodefone USB dongle” averaged around 25Mb/s download.
Any guidance on getting the best performance from the RUT241 would be greatly appreciated.
When it comes to signal values, the optimal suggestion here would be to look into Band Locking your device to certain mobile frequency bands to try and get as good of a signal strength as possible: https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/Band_Lock#
Other than that, it all comes down to the conditions & the environment of the device, if the location isn’t great (lots of disturbances, such as other devices, walls, metallic surfaces, etc.) it could also cause performance drops.
Thanks for this - I’ve been testing Band Locking, but so far have not found one that works better than others. I’m also not ruling out provider performance, but I’d like to cover all bases.
What is the expected throughput of the RUT240? is it capable of 50Mb/s or is the achieved sub 10Mb/s about all I’m going to get?
Regarding the RUT241 performance, at the end of the day, it all depends on a lot of factors, as mentioned earlier. Our advertised theorethical speeds are 150 mbps down and 50 mbps up, which translates to roughly 18.75 MB/s download and about 6.25 MB/s upload. What you seem to be achieving are great results actually, especially in the upload speed department - if you’re getting 12 MB/s you’re exceeding the advertised limit.
In that case, increasing the speeds, as mentioned earlier, all come down not only to the software end of things, but also to physical things such as location, environment, use case, antennas, and even the provider itself.
The signal strengths you’ve mentioned earlier aren’t bad, but aren’t great either, and if band-locking didn’t do the trick for your situation, then I believe the best options you have are either playing around with the placement of the device or looking into different antennas with better gain values. If you’re interested, you can look into the “compatible accessories” section of the product page, and you may find something that suits you: https://www.teltonika-networks.com/products/routers/rut241
