Inquiry: Fleet & Tool Tracking Solution for 20 Vehicles in Bermuda

Hello,

We are a small fleet operator with approximately 20 vehicles and are looking for a combined fleet management and tool tracking solution. Our main requirements are:

  • GPS vehicle tracking (real-time location, history, basic alerts)

  • Tool/asset tracking (being able to see which tools are on which vehicle)

  • Web-based portal to view vehicle and tool locations and run basic reports

I have a few questions:

  1. Coverage in Bermuda

    • Does your system (devices + SIM/connectivity platform) work reliably in Bermuda?

    • Do you have any recommended SIM or connectivity options for this region?

  2. Recommended hardware

    • Which GPS tracking device do you recommend for our vehicles (OBD, wired, or other) for a fleet of this size?

    • Which tool/asset tracking tags (e.g., BLE/RFID or similar) do you recommend for tracking tools stored in the vehicles?

    • Can the GPS tracker in the vehicle detect and associate the nearby tool tags, so we can see which tools are currently loaded on each vehicle?

  3. Trial / test devices

    • How can we obtain one vehicle tracking device and one tool/asset tag (or a small starter kit) to test with?

    • What is the approximate cost for the hardware and any monthly service fees for a pilot?

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in Teltonika Telematics solutions for your fleet!

  1. Coverage in Bermuda

I have found 3 operators there

Operator 2G (GSM) 3G (UMTS) 4G (LTE) 5G
Digicel 1900 MHz Band 5 (850 MHz) Band 13, Band 17 (700 MHz) Not deployed
One Communications 1900 MHz Band 5 (850 MHz) Band 5 (850 MHz), Band 12, Band 13, Band 17 (700 MHz) Deployed 2023 (bands TBD)
Paradise Mobile N/A N/A 700 MHz, 1700 MHz N77 (3700 MHz)

Compatibility Results

FMC920-QJIB0 (EU/EMEA version):

  • :white_check_mark: 2G: Will work on Band 2 (1900 MHz GSM)

  • :cross_mark: 4G: NO compatible LTE bands - missing Band 5, 12, 13, and 17

  • Result: Device will fall back to 2G only with very slow data speeds (max 85.6 Kbps)

FMC920-QKIB0 (Americas version):

  • :white_check_mark: 2G: Will work on Band 2 (1900 MHz GSM)

  • :warning: 4G: Partial compatibility - has Band 5 (850 MHz) only

  • Result: Will get 4G on One Communications’ Band 5 network, but will miss Band 12/13/17 coverage. Will fall back to 2G in areas without Band 5 coverage.

Recommendation

Consider these alternatives:

  1. FMM00A or FMM13A - North America versions with BG95-M1 modem (designed for North American bands)

  2. FMM80A - Also designed for North America

Regarding the recommendation of which SIM provider to use, I can not answer, all mentioned should be fine

  1. Recommended hardware

For a small fleet operation like yours, I recommend the FMM13A as an ideal starting point. This device offers the perfect balance between immediate functionality and future expandability, allowing you to grow your telematics capabilities as you discover what works best for your operation.

Why FMM13A for Your Fleet:

Scalable Architecture
The FMM13A is designed with expansion in mind, so you can start with basic GPS tracking and gradually add advanced features as your needs evolve—without replacing hardware.

Key Expansion Capabilities:

  • Driver Identification & Authorization
Add 1-Wire iButton readers to identify and authorize drivers, enabling driver behavior monitoring, access control, and accountability.

  • Advanced Vehicle Data Access
Integrate optional CAN adapters (LV-CAN200, ALL-CAN300, or CAN-CONTROL) to read critical vehicle data directly from the CAN bus, including:

    • Fuel level and consumption

    • Odometer readings

    • Engine RPM and temperature

    • VIN number

    • Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)

  • Flexible I/O Configuration
Multiple digital inputs (DIN), digital outputs (DOUT), and analog inputs (AIN) allow you to connect:

    • Sensors: Fuel level sensors, temperature sensors, door sensors

    • Safety devices: Panic buttons, driver alert systems

    • Control systems: Buzzers, relays, immobilizers

    • Custom solutions: Virtually any analog or digital accessory

  • Tool Tracking Integration
Built-in Bluetooth support enables seamless integration with EYE Beacons for tracking tools and assets loaded on each vehicle.

The Learning Advantage:

Starting with the FMM13A gives you time to understand your fleet’s specific needs before investing in additional accessories. As you identify which features deliver the most value—whether that’s fuel monitoring, driver behavior, or asset tracking—you can expand accordingly without hardware limitations.

This approach minimizes upfront costs while ensuring you’re never locked into a solution that can’t grow with your business.
