Hi ,
I want to ask if the external energy meter can be connected to read only Non EV Loads.
If external energy meter is connected to read both EV and Non EV Loads wouldnt it take time to calculate the available capacity and also another question how much time it takes to respond to changes in houshold loads or if another EV is connected to the other slave chargers?
Helo,
This is the smart meter that TeltoCharge is compatable with
https://wiki.teltonika-energy.com/view/Smart_energy_meters
If we are talking about 1 device, for the reaction there is a setting for that, by default it’s up to 3s but most of the time it reacts faster and lowers the charging
If we are talking about more than 1 devices, second device firstly will be calculated maximum charging and only then it will be allowed to charge

Hi ,
So I’ll explain my question further, The energy meter connects to read both EV and NON-EV Loads, Now the main charger which does the calculation as mentioned will first read this EV+NON-EV and lets take example that 3 chargers are there and all are in charging now when you read the data from energy meter then you must be reading Load data from all the chargers and subtracting to get NON-EV Load which you will subtract from Main capacity to get available capacity, so this whole process of calculation will take time whenever non ev loads change so how fast it will work in this case? and another question can the external energy meter be placed such that it only reads non ev loads and how frequently you read the energy meter data?
1.so this whole process of calculation will take time whenever non ev loads change so how fast it will work in this case
Data from energy meter is read 3 times per second.
- can the external energy meter be placed such that it only reads non ev loads?
No, because in that situation charger wont be able to see it’s own load and most likelly will take more than allowed current to charge what will lead to break of circuit breaker
If there wont be available more than 6A, last charger to whom car was connected will stop charging. And in general 6A is a minimal requirement to start charging the car
I think you didnt get my question when you read data from meter it gives you EV and NON EV loads , Now you also have Max capacity of the main panel, Now how do you calculate available capacity if there are more than 1 charger? I am assuming that you also go to read EV load from chargers and then subtract the Meter reading from EV Load that you get from charger to get Available Capacity Am i right? If yes then reading data from all charger and reading data from meter would take some time right? Sorry to bother so much as i had a bad experience with one of the Dynamic load management from one of the service providers as the breaker was popping a lot that is why i am asking for so much clarificaiton
Got it now, so the situation is like this:
1. Now you also have Max capacity of the main panel, Now how do you calculate available capacity if there are more than 1 charger?
Master charging is doing all the calculations, because master charger is able to see slaves charging data and also NON EV load from Smart meter
Master’s MAX power from grid, is the value that we have for everything EV Load+NON EV.
F.E if you have 100A for everything, to the masters max power from grid we write 100A. And let’s say your building is consuming 75A, Master charger will know that for all the charging stations at that moment we have 100-75=25A and will split it.
To read data from Energy meter in DLM mode “MEASURE GRID LOAD” must be enabled
P.S Reaction time for actions after change of available amps by default is 3 seconds, but could be adjusted at “current update interval”
Hi ,
Thanks for the detailed answer.
So when you say that master charger is able to see slaves charging data , I Have a question here does the master charger get the data from slave chargers through some communication protocol? And does the slave charger itself send its load data to master charger? That is what I am trying to understand is that how does the master charger get to know about slave chargers load data and how frequently it reads it?
Is my understanding correct that the master charger reads data from meter which is (EV + Non EV) then the master charger reads current data from all slave charegers and then subtract these two to get Non ev load then subtract this Non ev load from Max power from grid to get available capacity am i correct?
Hi,
To have a working DLM setup all chargers+energy meter must be connected using RS485 wires.
Through those wires Master can get information from Slaves and the energy meter, so it does calculations almost exactly how you explained.
Reading times are same: 3times per second for data and 3seconds(default, but adjustable) to react to changes
Okay thanks a lot!
So the 3 seconds reaction time is basically whenever Non ev load will change it will take max 3 seconds (default) to adjust EV Charger Loads accordingly am i right?
Hi,
Yes correct
