Using VPN to remotely connect to a PLC

Hello,

i have a PLC connected to to rut200 . The IP address of the rut200 is 192.168.1.2

IP address of plc: 192.168.1.6

I am using a VPN to connect and the ip address of the rut clients is 192.168.1.22 and user is 192.168.17.

I added route to the PLC and enabled LAN forwarding.

When connect to the rut VPN from my computer i am able to ping 192.168.1.22 but i cannot ping the plc or see it in the programming software.

Where am i going wrong? Does the PLC have to have a gateway?

Hello, @instruverse

Yes… THE PLC need to have the gateway configured.

Hello @instruverse,

Please let us know if you still require any assistance.

Best regards,

Hello, i was finally able to go on site and put in the gateway on the PLC but still i cannot get to the PLC. I have also moved the VPN client addressees to a different subnet ie the user and the RUT200 are on 192.168.255.6 and 192.168.255.10 which are given by dhcp.

PLC is on 192.168.1.5 and i can ping it from rut200 web interface. gateway is 192.168.1.2

RUT200 LAN is 192.168.1.2.

Hi,

Could you clarify which VPN you are using? Judging from your description, it sounds like you’re using RMS VPN Hub, correct me if I’m wrong though.

Suggestions from my end:

  1. Remove any routes that you have in the VPN Hub, and add a route like so:
  2. After adding the new route, restart the VPN Hub.
  3. Head to the clients tab in the VPN Hub, and hit the “Update configuration and certificates” button:

Finally, re-test the pinging, if it still doesn’t work - please confirm that the PLC is reachable from the device itself, in other words, make sure you’re able to ping the PLC from the RUT200.

Regards,
M.
