TRB500 IPv4 connectivity started to fail

Hello Everyone, I am newbie in this, self though and I though a great idea would be to have a TRB500 as primary source of internet for my remote house. It is connected with TP-Link ER605 router.

My challenge is that in default configuration it disconnects from internet about every 2 weeks giving me the errors:

  1. IPv4 connectivity started to fail
  2. about 2-3 minutes later: DNS resolution started to fail

TRB500 simply worked without any configuration out from the box (I am connecting to 5G with no issues). I tried setting it up as passthrough but without success and dropped the efforts.
I am not sure what could cause such issues, they are regular, firmware is updated, after simple reset all goes back to normal for about 2 weeks, When the error occur I am not able to access the device online via RMS so I need to go and psychically reset the device.
I’ll appreciate any help and detailed guidance if I need to configure it properly.
Thanks

Hi…

Please… check your device (TRB500) to be sure that is using last version… (dec/17/2024)
https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/TRB500_Firmware_Downloads

also… not best solution, but you can set the device to do auto reboot, when lost connection to internet.

Thank you for you prompt response.
Yes, I have updated the device to latest version and today it had the same issue first time after the update. This is why I think it has to do with configuration as independently from device version the issue occurs.

I have setup the reboot, thank you.
Any advices towards configuration of TRB500 and router altogether? I was assuming it ideally should work in a passthrough mode, but I was unable to configure it this way. My router was unable to access the internet in this setup, I could have been doing something wrong in there.

Thank you!

Hi…
You looked this URL?
https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/TRB500_WAN

" first connected to LAN or specified with MAC address "

Yes, I did had a look and I used this page to have tried using passthrough mode, with different settings: Router MAC provided, DHCP disabled on & off but no success.

In all cases I was first configuring TRB500 and saving and restarting it to make sure configuration was applied. Later configuring router to see if I get a connection. But still no success, maybe I am missing something.

I will try to configure it without providing the MAC of router and see.

Hi…

Reading about passthrough mode, the first device connected at lan as a dhcp client will get the tcp/ip address of the lte interface. The " same " ip address will be assigned to another device connected to lan… did you try to just do a test with your pc/mac?

I haven’t.
Do I understand it right, that I should get the internet connection on my laptop in passthrough mode if connected to LAN directly? And if yes, that would mean the mode is working correctly right?

correct…

Using this way… your pc/mac will get a ip from the lte interface and not from the lan dhcp server of the device.

Just be sure… the the OS of your pc/mac it is up to date… :sunglasses:

When using passthrough mode it is advisable to set a very low DHCP lease time both in the configuration of passthrough mode and in the DHCP service of the TRB500.
That way you make sure that when the TRB500 makes a network connection, or temporarily loses it and re-connects, the new updated outside IP address will be known to the connected device reasonably quickly.
It would be nicer when the TRB500 would bring down the ethernet link for a second or so whenever the address changes, but until now it does not do that. So the connected device would wait until the lease expires (or half that time, usually) before it notices the change, and the connection appears to be dead.

For Passthrough, then follow the below guidance, as an imperfect workaround for the known issues (assuming your SIM is in slot 1) …

Under NETWORK > WAN > WAN INTERFACES > mob1s2a1 > GENERAL SETTINGS set …

Lease time = 2 Minutes

MAC address = enter the ER605’s WAN MAC address. Assuming you have connected the TRB500 to the WAN port of your ER605, then this address is the MAC (on ER605 label underneath), incremented by 1

Under NETWORK > DHCP > SERVER SETTINGS > DHCPv4 SERVERS:lan > GENERAL SETUP set …

Lease time = 2 Minutes

… then with the TRB500 and ER605 connected via Ethernet cable, reboot the TRB.

I don’t know if Mobile Utilities works in Passthrough mode TRB500 Mobile Utilities - Teltonika Networks Wiki

… but it might be interesting to see if sending it an SMS containing …

MyAdminPassword reboot

… works, as it’s an option to reboot the device remotely.

Hi Marcelo, thank you for your help. Passthrough mode did work without issues and I was able to see same IP on TRB500 as well as on my laptop, but not on ERP605.
What was my mistake in configuration, was to put MAC address of a router and not the +1 increment MAC for WAN port as per Mike guidance. With +1 MAC for WAN it worked in an instant.

Now I give it couple of weeks to see if my original IPv4 issue is still occurring.

Thanks for the help and all the best in 2025!

Cheers…

Nice to read…

Happy 2025.

Hi Mike, I have followed your instruction and it worked like a charm the moment I’ve incremented the MAC address for WAN port. I did not know I need to do that.
Thank you for the guidance on this.

I have setup the lease times as you described and will see if this solves my IPv4 original issue. The reboot via SMS works (at least when all is working as should) so if the issue will reoccurred I’ll try this one to remotely reboot the modem.

Thank you for your support and have a great 2025.

You do not really have to enter a MAC address, it is optional.
When you do not enter it, the first MAC address that asks for an IP address will be honored.

I’d still recommend entering it because passthrough allows other devices to be plugged in, and people forget, especially if they’ve been debugging etc. and left their laptop plugged in. The laptop won’t complain but the router might be wondering where its WAN IP is.

The TRB500 only has a single ethernet port and no WiFi, so I think the risk is not that big that things go wrong. And it may even be helpful during debugging that you can connect a laptop instead of the router to see what IP you get and if there is connectivity.
It may be more useful on the devices that have multiple ports and/or WiFi.

Frankly I think it is more of a concern (and this is not mentioned in the documentation) that enabling the passthrough mode caps the speed to ~200-250 Mbps. So when you have a fast 5G subscription and want to use it optimally, you should use NAT mode, not Passthrough or Bridge.
Hopefully Teltonika can get around to fixing that.

You’re right about the TRB, I’d forgotten that it was only a single port device.
