SOLVED RUT240/241 wifi1 WAN interface does not reconnect when wifi accesspoint was off-line

My RUT240 (fw. RUT2_R_00.07.06.16) and RUT241 eSim do not reconnect to a wifi access point if the wifi access point was unavailable for a (short) period of time. To reproduce:

  1. Network, Wireless, SSIDs, Scan 2.4GHz
  2. I connect to the SSID of a wifi hotspot on my phone via ‘Join network’ and entering WPA passphrase and WAN network name wifi1
  3. The network is joined and SSID Status of hotspot goes to Up, the signal % is shown and Mode: Client
  4. Network, WAN, WAN Interface, interface Wifi1 Status= Up and the received IP adres is shown
  5. I can System, Maintenance, Troubleshoot, Ping 8.8.8.8 succesfully
  6. I turn off the hotspot on my phone; the status of the Wifi1 WAN interface goes to “Down” in a couple of seconds but the status of the Hotspot SSID stays ‘Up’ with Signal: 0%, even after several page refreshes and navigating the menu back and forth
  7. I turn the hotspot on the phone back on, the status of the Hotspot SSID remains ‘Up’ but signal remains 0%
  8. WAN interface Wifi1 stays Status: Down.
The only way to reconnect to the hotspot is delete the hotspot SSID and rescan the 2.4GHZ network (turning the Hotspot SSID off and on again does not help).

Good afternoon,

In the first instance, I would recommend upgrading your firmware to the newest.
Please do that using the bootloader method. This unique feature allows you to perform firmware update and reflash the device, which can potentially resolve the issue. Instructions on how to do so : RUT240 Device Recovery Options - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Firmware : RUT240 Firmware Downloads - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Also, when you get into editing the Wireless instance settings, enable/disable 802.11r Fast Transition option to see if you see a difference.

I would also like you to try to connect to the hotspot with a different device rather than your phone, or ressetting the phone to see if you still experience the same issues.

Regards,
Arturas

I could not find the enable/disable 802.11r Fast Transition option, but i have solved the problem! If i change the ssid mode ‘client’ to ‘Multi AP’ and enter the ssid and password of the phone’s hotspot manually in the settings of this Multi AP, the wifi1 network reconnects successfully after the phones hotspot was disabled and enabled again (it takes about a minute for the RUT240 to pickup the re-enabled phone hotspot access point).
This works because in Multi AP mode all access points are scanned every 60 seconds (or more often if the ‘scan interval’ is set shorter.

Why is this important to me? Now i can enable the hotspot on my phone, wait a minute, and then start the RUTOS app and install a new eSim more easy because the Teltonika has a internet connection via my phone (i hope, wil test later).
