RUTX50 - How can I get 5 GHz Wi-Fi in my motorhome?

Hello, I’ve bought a second-hand motorhome fitted with a RUTX 50 router. I only have 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi available.

On closer inspection, I realised that there was only one Wi-Fi antenna connected to the Wi-Fi port near the USB port.

On the other Wi-Fi port (near the earth socket), I only have a male-to-male extension cable, which is empty at the other end of the router.

None of this is accessible at all as space is very limited and I cannot directly access the sockets behind the router.

I would like to know if, by connecting a second antenna to the end of the male-to-male extension cable, I could get a 5 GHz band? Or do I also need to change the first antenna? Could you recommend an antenna to add for the 5 GHz band?

Is there a technical reason why the previous owner didn’t install a 5 GHz band? Thank you in advance, and I wish you a good day. Kind regards.

Well… should be two WiFi antennas… one in each sma conector…

One antenna for 2.4GHz and other antenna for 5GHz.

Yes… You can ban a short extension cable (male/female extension) and connect a WiFi antenna at the end of the cable.

Any 5GHz standard WiFi antenna will work… most are 2dBi.

No… no reason at all.

If space was limited, perhaps they decided not to have a 5Ghz antenna.

If they didn’t have any 5Ghz devices, then why fit it.

They lost it, broke it.

Perhaps they had some other 5Ghz access point that they used that was connected via an ethernet cable or in bridge mode.

Hello everyone, and thank you for your replies; sorry for the late response. In the meantime, I’ve somehow managed to enable the 5 GHz band, which leads me to believe that the single antenna is dual-band.

When I go to Network → Wireless → SSIDs:

I have 4 entries:

2.4 GHz - Access Point - On

5 GHz - Access Point - On

International Wi-Fi - 2.4 GHz - Client - Off

International Wi-Fi - 5 GHz - Client - Off

By disabling the two International Wi-Fi lines, the 5 GHz band appeared.

Originally, I wanted the router to be able to connect to an external Wi-Fi network, such as at a campsite, so I could use that network in my motorhome.

When I tried to scan the 2.4 GHz network, I couldn’t confirm it because I got an error.

In my motorhome, I use devices that only connect via 2.4 GHz, and then I have my computers, tablets and smartphone that I’d like to connect via 5 GHz. So, as I understand it, I’d need another antenna to connect to a 2.4 GHz network at a campsite?

So I’d need to buy a second antenna, at least a 2.4 GHz one, as my first dual-band antenna would already be powering my devices on both frequencies.

Please let me know if I should create a separate post for this.

If you want to benefit from the 2x2 MU-MIMO WiFi capabilities of the RUTX50, then you’ll need 2 antennas - so you’d have to puchase another antenna to go on the end of your cable.

As it is a campervan, then I can only assume that the previous owner couldn’t get decent coverage outside the van, so placed a single antenna, somewhere inside or outside, to get better coverage.

I’ve just ordered a Teltonika PR1KRD30 antenna, which I plan to plug into the free port on the extension cable. As I already have an antenna connected to the other port – though it’s not the same model – is there a risk of interference?

No… you have one for 2.4GHz and other for 5GHz.

Do you mean that of the two Wi-Fi ports on the back of the router, one will use the 2.4 GHz band and the other the 5 GHz band (with two antennas connected)?

So why was I able to activate both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with just the single antenna shown in the photo? I understood that the RUTX 50 has internal Wi-Fi antennas? Would one of the two bands be provided by one of these internal antennas?

No… Don´t have.

The RUTX50 does not have internal antennas and relies on at least one antenna connected to the external connectors. As you have discovered, it doesn’t matter which connector you use, as either one of them are able to operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously.

As I mentioned previously, using 2 antennas gives you the benefit of 2x2 MIMO. In simple terms, a single antenna will give you a connection, and a second antenna will improve the signal quality and speed.

Hello, and first of all I’d like to thank you for all your replies, which have helped me fine-tune my setup. You pointed out that the RUTX50 doesn’t have an internal Wi-Fi antenna, which made me question my router’s connections, as the small black antenna visible in the photos—the brand of which I don’t know—was, as far as I was concerned, solely a 2.4GHz antenna. However, I managed to activate the 5 GHz band as well… but where did it come from???

I spent a good part of last night testing various things. Whilst I couldn’t connect to the campsite’s Wi-Fi network (trying to connect displayed an error) via the router’s 192.168.1.1 interface (which, according to your messages, was to be expected as I only had a single Wi-Fi antenna connected), I managed to connect to the campsite’s Wi-Fi network via the Teltonika RutOS iOS app!!

After much searching and several long minutes, I was able to prioritise the campsite’s Wi-Fi network over my SIM card and enable Failover.

Everything was fine yesterday when I went to bed, but this morning I realised that the router was no longer connected to the campsite’s Wi-Fi. As the campsite’s Wi-Fi hotspot was far away, I wasn’t too worried. However, I realised that the 2.4 GHz SSID was no longer available on my devices even though it was enabled; only the 5 GHz band was accessible.

With all these doubts, I decided to roll up my sleeves and check the hard-to-reach connections on the router; it was a real struggle given the lack of space, but… I was wrong… A thousand apologies!!

What I can say now is that my router is indeed connected to two antennas, contrary to what I had thought.

So it’s connected like this:

- One Wi-Fi port on the router → to the small black antenna inside the motorhome. Is it a single 2.4 GHz band? I’d say so, as I found a similar antenna online that only operates at 2.4 GHz.

On the roof of my motorhome I have an antenna whose model number I don’t know, but I’ll try to find it as soon as I can get up onto the roof.

- 4 mobile ports are connected to it

- 1 GPS port is connected

- 1 Wi-Fi port is connected (what I initially mistook for an extension cable with nothing at the end is actually the second socket for the external antenna, which isn’t connected.

So both Wi-Fi ports on the router are connected: one to the external antenna and the other to the small black antenna inside.

- So I understand why I eventually managed to get both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands working.

- Although my setup was ultimately fine with two Wi-Fi antennas connected (internal + external), I don’t understand why I couldn’t activate the scan via 192.168.1.1 due to an error, whereas it worked on the iOS app, and why this morning the 2.4 GHz band and my connection to the campsite’s Wi-Fi were no longer accessible.

- I can’t understand where the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals are being broadcast from? I went outside and I don’t feel that the two signals are any stronger with the external antenna – quite the opposite, in fact.

- I think the previous owner installed this small black antenna indoors because the signal from the external antenna must have been too weak indoors?

Now I have some new questions and concerns:

As you know, I’ve since ordered a Teltonika PR1KRD30 antenna, which should arrive in a few days – I hope it will be of use to me!

What would you advise me to do? Replace the small black antenna with the new PR1KRD30, which I’m sure is dual-band, and keep one port on the external antenna? Connect both to the external antenna? Or keep the small black antenna plus the new PR1KRD30 indoors?

As a reminder, my initial requirement is:

Two separate Wi-Fi access point bands:

- 2.4 GHz for small devices inside my motorhome

- 5 GHz for smartphones, tablets and computers both inside and outside my motorhome

- Connect to a campsite Wi-Fi network whenever available as a priority, and if the signal is too weak, switch to the SIM card.

This antenna, is not the type that shipped with your model of the RUTX50. I believe that originally, it would have shipped with 2 x PR1KRD30 for WiFi, 1 x PR1KSG30 for GPS and 4 x PR1US540 for mobile connectivity.

IF that antenna is connected to your WiFi, then it looks like it’s a 2.4 GHz band antenna PR1KRF30, so replace it with the PR1KRD30. First though, I’d recommend connecting all the cables of your external antenna and see if you are happy with WiFi reception, on both bands, inside the motorhome. If you are, then ‘great’ as it is a better configuration for connecting to a campsite’s WiFi.

As with all things WiFi, there can be many factors at play that will affect its performance, so it’s very much ‘try something and see if there’s an improvement’.

Ensure that all connectors are firmly seated.

Hello, I thought I’d try replacing the small black antenna with the spare connector from my roof-mounted antenna. But I realised I needed an adapter, which I don’t have.

The spare Wi-Fi connector from the roof antenna has a pin inside it, and I believe the Wi-Fi connector on the back of the router also has a pin in the centre.

Do you think this adapter is the right one?

Before randomly connecting cables, you’ll need to first identify your external antenna and determine which function each of its cables perform - check that all are installed in the correct connectors. Does any writing on the green sleeve of that ‘spare’ connector, tell you its function?

On the RUTX50, the WiFi connectors are of the type ‘RP-SMA’ and the Mobile and GPS connectors are the type ‘SMA’. So in ordering any type of extension, you’ll require an adapter of the relevant ‘type’ named above.
