RUTX50 firmware update bricked device - won't enter bootloader mode

I tried to update firmware to RUTX50 and now it’s in a non working state - I think the update has bricked it.

Specifically, the power light shows green normally, the Lan light port lights up orange and blinks. But - when trying to factory reset or enter bootloader mode via the reset button there is no response, no other lights light up.

I also can’t get a response at all when connecting via a browser on pc when there’s a physical ethernet connection.

Please help!! How could it get it back to a working state? I’ve read some posts about setting up a special weird usb cable that I don’t understand… can I use the usb port? Any help really appreciated

Hey - I’ve had exactly the same issue.

My RUTX50 was working fine, fully normal operation - then tried to push the latest firmware update and it seems bricked.

No access via browser, no response to the reset button, can’t access factory reset or bootloader mode. Power definitely on, green light is there - LAN port blinking away in orange.

Tried everything I could think of. Assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Is there any “rescue” files that can be pushed to the RUTX50 via the usb cable/port at the front? How do we get these working again? It’s a key part of a project boss is gonna be avin kittens on Monday :o

Greetings,

Thank you for contacting us.

We are currently not aware of any issues with RUTX series devices becoming unresponsive after a firmware update, nor have we been able to replicate the issue after upgrading to the latest RutOS firmware version 00.07.23.4. Following the upgrade, the router appears responsive, and the bootloader menu is accessible via the procedure described in the wiki article: Bootloader Menu

Could you kindly share more details about how the issue occurred in your setup?

  • Which firmware version was installed before the upgrade?

  • Which firmware version was the router upgraded to?

  • Was the Keep Settings option enabled during the update?

  • Did the issue occur on a single device or multiple devices?

  • Could you also confirm whether the steps of accessing the bootloader menu were performed properly?

    • Was the PC configured with a static IP address of 192.168.1.* and a gateway of 192.168.1.1?

    • Was the Ethernet cable connected from the PC to the router, with no other cables connected to the device?

    • Was the PSU detached from the device, and was the reset button held for 4 (or longer) seconds after the cable was attached?

The whole procedure on how to access the device bootloader menu can be found on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewBrck2O35Q

Best regards,

Tomas

Hi Tomas, thanks for looking into this.

The issue occurred on a single device. I installed RUTX_R_00.07.22.3_WEBUI.bin, but I’m not sure what version was installed before. The firmware update was done via bootloader mode, so I don’t think Keep Settings was prompted? I got to the loading page that said you can close your browser but then the router didn’t restart, it just went into the state that it’s in now (unresponsive, only power light and LAN light up).

The steps for accessing the bootloader were promptly performed: it worked pre firmware update but no longer afterwards.

There is currently no access to bootloader menu, the reset button does not do anything.

Is there a way to rectify this?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have a similar issue with a RUTX08 unit when upgrading to either 00.07.23.x or 00.07.22.x. After an upgrade the unit powers on, Ethernet port(s) show LEDs however no response from the unit to ping/arp after the upgrade on expected or factory reset IPs.

We can when we have physical access do a factory reset upload firmware but this also fails to get a response from the unit on its factory default IP 192.168.1.1 after firmware upgrade/downgrade to 00.07.21.3, 00.07.20.3. So we appear to have a unit that factory resets but does not boot after firmware upload.

Answering your questions:

  • Which firmware version was installed before the upgrade? unfortunately we cant be sure

  • Which firmware version was the router upgraded to? 00.07.22.3 original and also 00.07.23.4 after factory resets.

  • Was the Keep Settings option enabled during the update? Yes

  • Did the issue occur on a single device or multiple devices? So far only seen on our sole RUTX08 unit, other RUTX10 units appear to have upgraded to 00.07.22.3 without issues.

  • Could you also confirm whether the steps of accessing the bootloader menu were performed properly?

    • Was the PC configured with a static IP address of 192.168.1.* and a gateway of 192.168.1.1? Yes, Mac laptop had IP 192.168.1.174, gateway 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0

    • Was the Ethernet cable connected from the PC to the router, with no other cables connected to the device? Yes, only LAN1 connected to the Mac laptop from the RUTX08

    • Was the PSU detached from the device, and was the reset button held for 4 (or longer) seconds after the cable was attached? Yes, after reset button released the Ethernet port LEDs lit up then we could access the firmware upgrade page to upload another firmware.

What are our options for the RUTX08?

Regards

Gareth

Hi Tomas, have you got any updates on this? Is there a way to force firmware to the device via another cable (that is not the ethernet) to get back up and running? Or to get it to factory settings please. It remains unresponsive.

Thank you
