We have a RUTX12 that has been working perfectly fine until recently, where is just stops passing data out of ports LAN1 and LAN2. It still keeps the physical network connection to the downstream switch, but just doesnt pass any data over either the native or tagged vlans its carrying. If we connect to LAN 3 or 4, everything is still working as expected.
Now, this first became apparent a couple of months ago, where we had it on an external deployment, and on return had assumed someone had played with our configuration (although I coundn’t find anything wrong). After not being able to find a configuration issue, we factory reset the unit and reprogrammed from scratch. All then seemed to be worked perfectly fine again for a couple of days, until this same issue has just now yet again occured. To be clear, no config changes have been made to the router since it was redeployed, it just simply stopped working after being powered on for several days.
Also worth noting, rebooting the device does not bring back funtionality to those ports. We’ve also updated the firmware, which made no difference… Thoughts?
To start investigating this matter further, could you please clarify a few points?
Which firmware version was the device running when this issue first began to occur? If possible, please ensure it is running the latest stable firmware.
If I understand correctly, the issue only affects LAN1 and LAN2 for outbound VLAN traffic, right?
Have there been any changes made to the firewall configuration, such as traffic rules, masquerading, or zones, prior to or around the time this issue appeared?
The unit was originally running 7.16.1, and was then updated to 7.17.2 in an attempt to see if it resolved the issue (it did not).
It does appear to only affect LAN 1 and 2, but setting either of those ports to simply be an untagged ‘access’ port (if talking cisco), the ports still do not pass data.
As mentioned in the original post, NO changes had been made to the routers configuration. It simply worked for a period of time, then fails. Rebooting seems to bring data movement back for a few second, but then stops working again. Also forgot to say in the original post, there are no errors being reported in the log.
To also elaborate on the factory reset situation, I reprogrammed the router manually from scratch, so to be clear we didnt just load a backup configuration file. This seemed to bring the functionality of the ports back for 2-3 days, until the failure again occured with NO changes being made to the unit.
Also worth noting, this is a standard configuration we run on multiple RUT’s in our inventory, and are not seeing this issue on any other deployment.
In this case, to understand and start troubleshooting this matter more effectively, we’ll need to continue this process privately, because sensitive/publicly unshareable information, such as the troubleshoot file, public IP addresses, serial numbers, etc., needs to be collected.
