RUTX11 roaming aggressiveness setting

Dear Teltonika Community

I have several RUTX11 routers working in a mobile environment. The RUTX routers are wireless clients connected to centrally managed cisco access points. They are using a dedicted ESSID broadcasted across many access points.

I see that the RUTX routers tend to stick too long to a single AP even though much better signal level / much nearer AP is available.

What is the way to make the RUTX router to initiate roaming earlier?
I know that there is a setting for triggering background scanning at a certain signal level but does it anyhow influence when the interface driver decides to roam to a differet AP?

Let’s consider only old style 802.11i layer 2 roaming, not touching 802.11k .11r for now.

Hello,

Could you please confirm whether your current Cisco and RUTX11 configuration is operating as part of a mesh network? If so, there is an option within the RUTX11 settings (under mesh configuration, Additional settings tab) to forward mesh peer traffic through another node once the signal between the gateway and the current node falls below a defined threshold.

If, however, you’re using a multi access (multi AP) point environment, where the RUTX11 acts as a wireless client connecting to different Cisco APs, you can enable the Fast Roaming feature that is available under the client SSID’s Advanced Settings tab:

Enabling Fast Roaming allows the router to scan periodically and switch to a stronger AP once the signal strength from the current AP drops below a specified threshold.

Best regards,

Hi Martynas, thank you for your reply.
No, we do not use a mesh setup. Let’s assume all cisco APs are cabled to the wired network.
(but we have seen different forwarding trouble when a RUTX11 client was connected to a mesh AP).
I will try to test fast roaming settings and see if it improves the situation.
