Rutx09 open ports

Hello
I would like to open selected ports on RUTx09. Is this possible? There will be a second router connected to the router, which needs open ports on rutx09.
Thank you for your help.

Hi @feds0503,

what do you mean by “open ports”? You can’t just open a port without
something listening on this port. Either there is a service running on
this machine or (and I think that’s what you mean) you forward the
port to a destination machine on the LAN side of the router.

That is called “port forwarding” and can be found in the firewall settings
of your router.

Hi
Thank you for your reply. What I mean is, can I open ports on my router without already having a device connected to my LAN that will require open ports?
If the device is already connected, I can do port forwarding, that’s correct, but can I open these ports earlier?
Thank you very much for your help.
Regards.

If you are simply doing this in preparation for the new device, then you should still do port forwarding even though the device does not yet exist. But it won’t achieve anything until that device is connected.

You can open a port, but it will achieve nothing unless there is a process listening on that port.

You mention that the second router “needs open ports”. I assume that the second router would be connected behind the RUTx09? You only need port forwarding if that router needs to access incoming connections from the internet. You will also probably require a public static IP address on your RUTx09’s public interfaces.

That’s exactly what I meant.
Thank you very much for your explanation.
Ultimately, I will connect the device to the network and then forward the ports. I have a static public IP address, so I think there will be no problem
Thank you again for your help.
Regards.
