RUT361 Sms not working

Hello Teltonika Support,

I am reporting a bug with the SMS Control feature on the RUT361.

Issue summary:
The RUT361 correctly receives SMS commands and triggers the corresponding rules (the WebUI shows the “triggered” popup), but it never sends the SMS reply back to the sender. No response is received for any command (status, reboot, etc.).

Environment:

  • Device: RUT361, firmware RUT361_R_00.07.22.3
  • Affected units: 2 separate RUT361 devices (one in the field, one in the office) – both exhibit the same behavior
  • SIM operator: TIM (Italy), with TIM Euro Messaging plan active (SMS MO confirmed working)
  • SMS Gateway: Enable ON, Reply SMS-Utilities rules ON
  • Authorization method: By device admin password

Troubleshooting performed:

  1. SMS commands ARE received by the router (messages appear in Mobile Utilities → Messages)
  2. Rules ARE triggered (WebUI popup confirms “triggered” on command receipt)
  3. Commands ARE partially executed (e.g. reboot occurs after ~2 minutes)
  4. No SMS reply is ever sent back to the sender
  5. Factory reset performed on the office unit – issue persists
  6. Same SIM inserted in a RUT200 with the same settings: SMS Control works perfectly, replies are received immediately

Conclusion:
The issue is specific to the RUT361 firmware/hardware. The SIM supports SMS MO, the rules are correctly configured, and the identical setup works on RUT200. This appears to be a firmware bug on RUT361 affecting outgoing SMS in the SMS Control reply flow.

Please advise if there is a known fix, a firmware patch, or a workaround.

Thank you.

Hello,

The latest stable firmware version available for the RUT361 is 7.22.4 .

Could you please update your device to this version and check whether the issue still persists afterward? You can download the firmware from our Wiki page here: https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/RUT361_Firmware_Downloads.

Best regards,

Hi.
I updated both RUT361 units to firmware 7.22.4 and the issue persists unchanged.

The behavior is the same: after sending an SMS command, the WebUI shows the “SMS rule triggered” popup after approximately 2 minutes, but no SMS reply is ever sent back to the sender.

This feels like a bug specific to the RUT361 affecting outgoing SMS in the SMS Control reply flow. Is it known?

Could you please investigate on it?

Thank you.

Bumping this post as I haven’t received any response in 7 days.

I purchased through Digi-Key and I don’t have access to the official support portal. Is there any way to open a support ticket in my situation? This forum is currently my only channel.

The issue is reproducible on two separate RUT361 units and is not present on the RUT200 with identical configuration.

Greetings @Fiama,

Our apologies for the delayed response.

Could you please verify whether you are able to send SMS messages from the RUT361 to another device, such as another RUT device or a mobile phone?

Additionally, could you check whether the Send Response SMS option is enabled in the SMS rule configuration window?

Also could you also let us know whether you are experiencing this issue with all SMS commands or only with specific ones? If the issue only affects certain commands, please specify which SMS rules are impacted.

Best regards,
Povilas

Hello Povilas,

Here are the answers to your questions:

  1. Sending SMS from RUT361 to another device: the RUT361 is not able to send SMS to any device. I tested by sending an SMS from the router via SMS Gateway and no message was received.

  2. “Send Response SMS” option: yes, it is enabled.

  3. All commands are affected, not just specific ones. None of the SMS rules (status, reboot, etc.) ever produce an SMS reply.

Hello @Fiama,
