RMS VPN Hub Inactivity timeout issue

Hey everyone,

we have two RMS VPN Hubs which we use to connect together 1 RUT950 device per hub and 1 AWS EC2 Linux based instance. VPN Hubs are based in Germany, same as the client devices.

We keep getting the “Inactivity timeout” messages every minute or so, regardless of the VPN Hub or the client device (RUT or EC2 Linux), which makes our VPNs to constantly restart and the connection is not reliable at all. Which makes me think this service for which we are paying is not production ready.

I also tried delete the VPN hub and create a brand new one - the result was the same.

Here is an example from a RUT950 device:

Wed Sep 13 14:05:01 2023 daemon.notice openvpn(rms_XXX)[29070]: [teltonika-vpn-XXX] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting
Wed Sep 13 14:06:18 2023 daemon.notice openvpn(rms_XXX)[29070]: [teltonika-vpn-XXX] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting
Wed Sep 13 14:06:44 2023 daemon.notice openvpn(rms_XXX)[29070]: [teltonika-vpn-XXX] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting
Wed Sep 13 14:08:56 2023 daemon.notice openvpn(rms_XXX)[29070]: [teltonika-vpn-XXX] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting
Wed Sep 13 14:10:11 2023 daemon.notice openvpn(rms_XXX)[29070]: [teltonika-vpn-XXX] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting
Wed Sep 13 14:10:56 2023 daemon.notice openvpn(rms_XXX)[29070]: [teltonika-vpn-XXX] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting

Would appreciate your support into getting a stable VPN connection between our client devices and the RMS VPN Hub.

Hello,

Is the connectivity on the devices themselves good? Is the issue specific to VPN Hubs only?

I assume each device is connected only to one Hub at a time (one VPN instance). Is that correct?

Does this issue occurs only sometimes or is it persistent?

Could you please clarify if you have tried a different VPN Hub server, like Bahrain or US? Does the issue persist then?

Kind Regards,

Hey AndzejJ,

Thank you for taking the the time to respond to the submitted by you issues.

  • The connectivity on the devices and the Linux instances is good. As mentioned, the issue is present on both RUT950 devices and two Linux devices located in AWS EC2 region eu-west-1.
  • The setup is 1 Linux EC2 instance and 1 RUT950 are both connected to the same 1 VPN Hub. We have 2 such setups and they both suffer from the same problem.
  • The issue is persistent
  • I didn’t try a VPN hub in a different region than Germany, although I saw such proposal here in the forum. For data security reasons we can’t route the traffic via VPN Hubs located outside of the EU. I can give it a try, just for testing purposes, but even if it works, it won’t be a setup which we can use.

Hello,

It would be great if you could try a different region just for the testing purposes at least. Try to run it for a while if possible and let me know if the stability improved.

Kind Regards,

Good morning, AndzejJ,

Coming back on your suggestion to try running an OpenVPN hub in another region. I created a new one in the USA region and connected the two clients. It has been running for 3 days now and it’s been stable and without a single disconnection. So yes, this helped and it seems that the problem is that the OpenVPN Hub servers in Germany are overloaded.

Could you still provide me with a stable OpenVPN Hub in Germany region?

Thank you.

Hello,

In this case, since this is a public forum and there is no way for us to exhange information privately, I would suggest contacting your designated sales manager or the reseller from whom you purchased the device. Alternatively, we also have a ‘contact us’ form here. This way, you will be able to provide additional information about your RMS account and other relevant information, and the team will be able to look into the issue from the RMS side.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for your help.

I addressed it via the ‘Contact Us’ form.
