Hi, the App doesnt work for me. I can use the OpenVPN Connect app, but this doesnt support TAP instead of TUN.
So I installed the latest version 0.9.1. I start it, click login, provide my crendentials, a browser shows up, says I am connected, and closes. But in the app, it still shows the Login button only.
If it is possible, could you please try testing the application on a different computer? So we could determine if the issue is in the application or your PC. Also, please clarify which platform are you using (Windows / Mac / Android).
Important note: the app for windows is still in the BETA stage, and therefore minor bugs may be expected
Also, could you please clarify the following:
Does the VPN work once you are connected to the web version of RMS?
I am using Windows11 and can confirm that the RMS VPN Client App is working on another PC.
The PC where it is working has the same OS, the App installation seems the same, shows version 1.0.0.0 date 02.07.2025. After logging it shows the VPN configured in RMS.
On the web version of RMS, I can see both clients, which are the PC-Client as well as the RUT device. I can connect to the Web-UI of the RUT by clicking the IP.
My task is to reach devices connected to the LAN port of the RUT on Layer2, that’s why I am trying to get this TAP instead of TUN VPN up and running, and that in turn is the reason why I try the App, since the OpenVPN-Connect Client doesn’t support TAP.
Using OpenVPN-Connect Client and the ordinary VPN hub, I can reach devices on the LAN of the RUT, but only by means of a routed connection (Layer3).
So, I have 2 different issues:
a) The RMS VPN Client App on 1 PC doesn’t really log in. On the working PC, it keeps disconnecting for some minutes but finally connects.
b) The Layer2 (TAP) VPN isn’t working for me, even if I try on the PC with the App working. It finally connects, gives my PC an IP from within the VPN, but if I try Layer 2 (using TIA-Portal to search the net, it doesn’t find anything.
Could you please provide me with a topology / scheme of your network? Please refrain from posting any MAC addresses and public IP addresses as a reply to this thread. This will help me to fully understand the structure of your network.
RMS VPN hub is based on OpenVPN, therefore, it should work. Could you please clarify if you’re setting it up in TAP mode?
Regarding the OpenVPN client APP, I have tested it on my pc as well and it seems to be working. That would indicate an issue with one particular PC.
TIA Portal connects to a VPN through a VPN client on your PC, which creates a virtual network adapter such as a TAP-Windows Adapter. You then configure the “PG/PC interface” in TIA Portal to use this adapter to locate and communicate with the remote PLC. I just wanted to confirm whether the PC is correctly configured with TIA Portal.
Could you please also check the settings in TIA Portal to see if there is an option to select a default gateway for the connection, such as a router or VPN?
In case your setup is correct and you will need additional assistance, let me know, so we could switch to a private channel for further investigation.
The topology is quite simple: On the RUT’s LAN, there is the PLC (S7-1200), having no IP-address assigned yet. The RUT’s LAN is configured to 192.168.0.50 and 192.168.1.1.
The RUT is connected to the internet via mobile (cellular, SIM card).
I logged into the RMS platform and started the “TAP VPN hub”.
On the “PC working”, I start the RMS VPN App, it automatically shows the “TAP VPN hub”. In a CMD of the Windows PC, an ipconfig /all shows the “OpenVPN TAP-Windows6” and an IP assigned by the VPN server.
I start TIA, go to “Online & Diagnose”, select the adapter, and click search. But it doesn’t find the PLC.
Previously, I already set up a VPN hub using TUN – everything works.
And yes, I would appreciate if we could continue on a private channel…
I have tested the setup on my side and was able to replicate the issue as well. I have escalated this case to our RMS R&D team for further investigation. I will keep you informed as soon as I receive any updates.
