Question about failover between mobile wan intefaces

I use a RUT241 with a physical SIM1 and an eSIM1 profile. The interfaces are called mob1s1a1 and mob1s2a1e1 respectively. Failover is explained as that when the connection on the wan interfa ce with the highest matric fails, the router switches to the next lower metric. And the router changes back to the interface with the higher metric once the router determines that the connection on the interface with the higher metric is restored. But if i create a failover between mob1s1a1 and mob1s2a1e1, they use the same modem. So if the router wants to determine if the connection on the higher metric sim is restored, it disconnects the just established connection to do so, resulting in constant connection loss. So, is it possible to create a failover between two SIM profiles (SIM and eSIM)?

Good afternoon,

Due to technical limitations (RUT241 having only one mobile modem active at once) You can utilize Sim Switch functionality. More info : RUT241 Mobile - Teltonika Networks Wiki

You can make it so that when one of the sim’s encounters specific circumstances, it will switch to another sim.

F.e. if you had a device like RUTX12, a device that can have two mobile modems working at once, you would be able to utilize failover functionality.

Thank you!

As far as i can determine, once a SIM switch was performed, there will be no check wether a switch back to the original situation could be performed?. In other words, there is no periodic check wether the circumstances which lead to the SIM switch are resolved?

If so, i could create a script which reverts to the eSIM profile like very 12 hours. If the connection on the eSIM profile is still not restored, the SIM switch will switch to SIM1 again.

Hi there,

You can make it so that the Sim 2 (Inactive sim) would switch back to Sim1 by turning on this function :

You can choose a time, after which the Sim 2 will switch back to SIM 1. Or you can make it so that SIM 2 switches back after a certain circumstance has been achieved.

You state “You can make it so that the Sim 2 (Inactive sim) would switch back to Sim1 by turning on this function :”

but do you mean “You can make it so that the Sim 1 (active sim) would switch back to Sim2 (inactive SIM) by turning on this function :”?

Think of this situation:

  • i have an active eSIM profile on SIM2
  • i have a backup physical SIM in SIM1
  • SIM2 looses connection; an automatic SIM switch to SIM1 takes place

If i set “Switch to next SIM after delay” to 720 minutes, will the RUT241 switch back to SIM2 again? And if the connection can be restored, it will stay at SIM2, or if the connection cannot be restored it will switch to SIM1 again. And after 12 hours the same thing happens.

Hi there,

If you utilize the functionality above, after the Sim switches to another sim, let’s say due to poor signal. If you enable switch to next sim after delay, the device will try to switch back to Sim1, after the provided timeframe.
