Issue with SMS Commands for VPN Control on TRB246

Hello,

vpnon / vpnoff SMS commands have no effect on my TRB246.

I send:

vpnoff <vpn_instance_name>

vpnon <vpn_instance_name>

But it has no effect - othe SMS works (e.g. reboot, cellular apn change)

Note :I see a similar discussion for RUT241 - but referring to a specific FW for a fix.

What is the status for the TRB246?

Hello,

Could you please confirm if your TRB246 is running the latest 7.17.3 firmware? If not, please download it from this page, update the device, and check if the issue persists.

Please let me know the results.

Best regards,

Thanks Marija. It looks bettter after upgrade. vpnoff worked immediately. vpnon required multiple attempts. I will retry testing and report if necessary

Hello,

Good to hear there are improvements!

I look forward to your feedback.

Best regards,

Hi Marija,

I retested.

Vpnoff worked immediately. (11:21)

Vpnon required again multiple attempts.

I see from the event logs that the SMS was not processed:

4163 2025-09-17 11:37:49 CONFIG Events Notice openvpn configuration has been changed
4162 2025-09-17 11:37:49 SMS Events Notice VPN turned on from: +32xxxxxxxx (internal modem)
4161 2025-09-17 11:37:49 SMS Events Notice SMS received from: +32xxxxxxxxx (internal modem)
4160 2025-09-17 11:21:41 CONFIG Events Notice openvpn configuration has been changed
4159 2025-09-17 11:21:41 SMS Events Notice VPN turned off from: +32xxxxxxxxx (internal modem)
4158 2025-09-17 11:21:40 SMS Events Notice SMS received from: +32xxxxxxxxxxx (internal modem)

I had sent SMS vpnon right after vpnoff at 11:21.

Retried at 11:22 too

The SMS are confirmed as sent and delivered on mobile phone. (for all SMS).

Hence i think there is still room for improvement on getting notifications from modem.

Hello,

Could you please let me know the modem firmware version of your TRB246?
You can find it by navigating to System → Firmware → Update Firmware.

Best regards,

Internal modem firmware version

EC25EUXGAR08A15M1G_20.200.20.200

I did run again another test: it looks that it does not consider the new vpnon message for around 1-2 minute. then it worked. Maybe because the TRB is busy still managing the vpnoff request. but nothing is in the event log. hence my initial suspicion on the modem

Hello,

If I understand correctly, both vpnoff and vpnon commands work, but for vpnon you need to wait a little while for the VPN to actually be enabled, right?

If that’s the case, this is normal—sometimes it just takes a bit of time to enable the VPN.

Best regards.

The issue when reactivating the VPN is not the vpnon command per ser. It is rather that the SMS is sent, well received (according to the mobile operator) but not processed by the TRB (it is not visible in the event log).
