How to reconfigure RUTM54 interface IP without losing web UI access during eSIM setup

Setup: RUTM54 modem (192.168.5.5) powered via POE, connected to smart switch with Raspberry Pi access. No SIMs/eSIMs installed. No Wi-Fi antennae connected.

Goal: Add eSIM to modem .5 using internet connection from modem .3 (192.168.5.3) on the same network.

Problem: To route traffic through .3, I need to create a new interface on eth port with a different IP, which requires unassigning the current .5 address. Once unassigned, I lose web UI access and cannot reassign the new address.

Question: What’s the best way to reconfigure the interface IP and routing without losing access during the transition? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Greetings,

To provide an internet connection to the 192.168.5.5 router, you would need to connect the 192.168.5.3 router’s LAN to the WAN port of the 192.168.5.5. After that, the eSIM activation should work normally.

Could you please clarify why you need to route traffic through .3?

Well it’s a network where .3 has a working connection via Starlink, so .5 needs to route traffic through .3 in order to download the eSIM profile and register on the network.

In normal cases I would connect the RUTM54 to Wi-Fi for temporary upstream access, but that is not possible here because .5 has no Wi-Fi antennae attached and only a single Ethernet cable connected.

To clarify:

  1. 192.168.5.3 is a RUTX08 with its WAN connected to Starlink and its LAN connected to a managed switch.
  2. 192.168.5.5 is a RUTM54 with its LAN connected to the same switch.

Greetings,

I may be misunderstanding the setup, but if the switch is connected to the RUTM54’s LAN, you should simply be able to connect the switch to the RUTM54’s WAN port instead to obtain internet access.

Thanks for the response, and while that’s true, this unit will be remotely operated and I won’t be able to move cables around, that’s the big issue here.

And so back to the original scenario:

  • RUTM54 with mobile antennae, no Wi-Fi antennae and the LAN connected to a switch
  • RUTX08 connected to a Starlink and also connected to the same switch

I must figure out a way of remotely loading an eSIM to the RUTM54, without having to physically modify anything! Let me know if you need additional information.

Greetings,

Thank you for clarifying your use case.

You should be able to route internet traffic through the RUTX08 by adding a default route on the RUTM54.

Please navigate to Network → Routing → Static Routes and add a route similar to the one shown in the screenshot.

Afterwards, click Save & Apply. Once applied, the RUTM54 should have internet connectivity.

Please let me know if this helps you out.
