Hello everyone, I have a serious question about firmware updates: I currently use a RUTM51 for a video surveillance system. It worked perfectly. Some time ago, I performed a firmware update and noticed connection interruptions.
After a lot of back and forth, the (very helpful) support team provided me with a modem firmware update and, together with the RUTM_R_00.07.15.4 firmware, the router now works perfectly in my application area.
I am not planning to use it for any other purpose.
Since firmware updates always carry the risk that something will not work afterwards (as we often read), I am wondering whether I should do another one at all.
What would be the risks if I left everything as it is (except that everything works perfectly :-))?
What is your opinion on this?
Best regards,
Peet
Over the years i have undergone many hundreds even thousands of firmware updates on all sorts of stuff and not given the consequences of doing so any thought at all whatsoever.
Now that i have a Teltonika router and experiences several issues after updates, i hesitate to do updates.
Currently, i have the latest modem firmware (which i updated this last few days without issues) with device firmware 07.15.4, but i’m struggling to move on to the next device firmware 07.16.2!?
I am debating whether to wait for another 07.16.* release, or wait until Teltonika decide on which release will be their next “Stable Firmware” version.
I have also struggled with issues after “day 1” firmware updates. I have a modest fleet of RUTx devices, so I usually test on my home unit first for a few days, if all is well then I start slowly rolling out to “low risk” devices that are within short walk/drive distances, and work outward from that, only updating the most critical devices after at least a couple of weeks of confirmed stability from the others.
If you only have 1 or 2 devices, then this strategy won’t make sense for you. No matter what, there is always a risk to installing new firmware, but there is also a risk of NOT doing so (unpatched vulnerabilities, not staying compatible with new RMS updates/features). Only you can decide which risk is smaller. It’s good to wait at least a few days as most major show-stopper bugs will appear here on this forum soon after new releases.
Can’t say that our general opinion is much different from @luckman212’s. We’ve made some changes as of recent to the firmware download pages where currently, there is a Stable and a Latest firmware version available. The stable version gets picked judging by the feedback received & the tests done on that particular firmware:
In short - if there’s risk of losing connection to the device, or some important data, or just stopping all processes altogether, you’re better off with either:
Staying with your current firmware version & upgrading only during a time where there’s no need to use the device for anything
Upgrading to the Stable firmware version, which, as mentioned, has been confirmed to have no issues according to our users & internal QA testing.
