Firewall port issue

The situation:

I have a garagebox with a RUT241 and a Foscam X5 camera attached to it via Wifi (192.168.1.xx,port “abcd”)
If my phone is connected to the same wifi, I can see my camera pictures
I created a firewall rule for port “abcd”.
Now if I am at home I want to see the same pictures, therefor I connect to the IP adres of the SIM, with port “abcd”, but unfortunately I am not able to connect.
What do I do wrong, or I am forgotten something?

If your RUT241 is using a regular domestic SIM, then it will NOT have a ‘Public IP’, and thus will not be directly accessible over the internet. You can use RMS, or a VPN Relay Service such as Tailscale or Zerotier.

Hello @Rijsemus,

Could you please let me know if you still need any assistance?

Best regards,

Hi, I managed to install ZeorTier on my phone, my PC and the RUT241, and I can see my pictures now.

I will try to install ZeroTies also with Docker on my Synology NAS, so I can record my pictures with the Synology Surveillande software. Do you know if the compleet NAS then will we part of the ZeroTier network, or just the connection via ZeroTier?

Will the videostream data be accounted by the SIM card of the RUT, or by the receiving NAS?

Hello, Rijsemus,

Thank you for an update on your progress!

To your questions:

  1. Will the entire Synology NAS become part of the ZeroTier network, or just the container?

This depends on how you configure the Docker container when running ZeroTier on your Synology:

Option A — Docker in host network mode

In this mode, the NAS itself joins the ZeroTier network.

  • The NAS receives its own ZeroTier IP.
  • All NAS services (including Surveillance Station) are reachable over ZeroTier.
  • This is usually the best setup when you want Surveillance Station to access remote cameras.

Option B — Docker in bridge mode

Only the container becomes part of the ZeroTier network.

  • The NAS itself will not have a ZeroTier IP.
  • Only services inside the container are accessible through ZeroTier.

For your intention — connecting Surveillance Station to the camera over ZeroTier - host mode is the correct and most convenient choice.

  1. Will the videostream traffic be counted on the RUT241’s SIM card or on the NAS side?

All video traffic coming from your remote camera must first travel through the RUT241’s 4G connection, then through ZeroTier, and finally to your NAS.

Because the data enters the internet via the RUT241, the SIM card will be billed for all streamed video traffic.

The NAS only receives the stream; it does not generate internet usage for this data path, except for minimal protocol overhead.

So yes - continuous video streaming can consume a significant amount of mobile data.

Please note that if you access the camera videos using your phone over a mobile data connection, both SIM cards will incur data usage: the one in the RUT241 and the one in your phone. This is because the video stream follows this path:

Camera → RUT241 → Mobile network → Internet → Your phone → Mobile data network

In this scenario, the RUT241’s SIM card is used for uploading the video, while your phone’s SIM card is used for downloading it. This is standard behavior for remote streaming from devices behind a mobile router.

You may reduce data usage by:

  • Switching to event-based recording
  • Lowering bitrate or resolution
  • Using onboard SD-card recording and pulling clips only when needed

I hope this answers your question,

Kind regards,
V.

Thanks, yes it answers my questions for now
