I am trying to determine if any Teltonika routers/gateways can send and receive SMS messages over 4G. I need to verify 4G SMS before I purchase a Teltonika device.
I have looked through the user manuals for several routers/gateways that support SMS. The device user manual’s state that the device must be connected to a GSM network for sending SMS messages. Is this correct, or is that claim outdated?
Is anyone using a Teltonika device to send and receive SMS messages over 4G?
Obviously the device must be connected to a GSM network, how else should it be able to send/receive?
I’ve owned a RUT950 for several years and now have a RTX50 that both work perfectly well with SMS.
4G supports SMS over IMS or NAS, GSM is not available. By GSM network, does Teltonika mean a 2G or 3G network, or does it mean a network that supports the GSM message format? 4G does use the GSM message format.
I have seen some questions on this forum asking for help on sending SMS over 4G, and some advice given. It is not clear if the advice worked or not.
Yes, most of the devices support SMS over IMS or NAS. I’m saying some, as certain LTE modules are data-only. Could you clarify what device in particular you’re interested in?
I purchased a RUTM50 and can confirm that the RUTM50 sends and receives SMS messages over an AT&T 4G network. I don’t have access to a 5G network for testing. Hopefully Teltonika will update their router user’s manuals to make it clear if a router can send SMS over 4G/5G.
Hi, @Daumantas,and @com22. I’ve been searching - so glad to find this post!
Ice.net has (recently) pulled the plug on both 2g and 3g here in Norway, leaving us with only 4g (and 5g)
Phones can send sms /make calls with Volte enabled.
I have a RUT200 and RUT901. They worked flawlessly until a few months ago while 2g was still provided - but with 2g gone I can’t get either of them to send or receive sms over 4g, with or without volte enabled. So, I’ve lost the ability to send sms to the routers to reboot, get status or change profile etc. It’s Such a loss.
You mentioned some Teltonika routera can, and some can’t, handle sms over IMS/Nas + 4g… What about the rut200 and RUT901?
Adding a 2nd sim to the RUT901 on a 2g enabled network, for sending and receiving sms, could work but there are no workarounds for the rut200 as it has one sim slot only. (I have to stick to ice/4g for the data sims)
Is there a working solution, maybe a future firmware update that can fix the “sms over 4g only” issue? (I’m on
RUT2M_R_00.07.13.4 and latest modem fw)
.. This is a kinda’ new problem, that network providers stops providing 2g…i must admit I didn’t see that one coming.
If yes, then could you clarify if both RUT200 and RUT901 uses Quectel EC200A modem (can be found in Status → System)?
What I’m guessing happened, is that the router likely used circuit switched domain (2G, 3G) for SMS and then went back to LTE once the message was sent. Now that there is no 2G/3G to fall back to, it cannot send the message.
And just to clarify, the exact same SIM card is used in the mobile phone and the router? And SMS (not RCS or iMessage) works on the phone?
@Daumantas,thank you for the quick reply. I can confirm the modem hw is EC200A-EU, and the RUT901 now suddenly receives and sends sms with VoLTE enabled. What a relief. The router is a 4 hour drive away, in a Very unattended location. A bit nerve wrecking adjusting networks settings via zerotier so crucial to have the option to reboot etc via sms.
I can’t remote access the rut200 for the moment but it must be the same issue. Caused by, like you said, both routers had VoLTE disabled and switched to 2g to send/receive sms.
Very strange the RUT901 now suddenly plays ball, I tried with and without volte, rebooting, spending hours before asking here.
( it seems rut901 and rut200 can be added to the list of routers that can send/receive sms over 4g(only) - with VoLTE enabled)
Mystery solved… Thank you for your advice. And time
To clarify, I tested the exact same sim from the rut200 in an old 2g ‘dumb fone’, hence it must’ve roamed to a network that offers 2g. Hence working in the phone, not in the router. Sending from smartphones over VoLTE was tested on the same network, but with another sim.. Haha sorry, I’ll improve my fault finding methods…
Please excuse the stupidity here but i am very new to tgis sort if thing and am having the same problem with 3 Rut200 units that i can not get to register on the tRMS PLATFORM and are miles away from my home i need to try the same thing using Sms but do know how to do it or where to send the text or even how to send the text can any one helpPlease
