I found this forum during the current RMS outage and was impressed by the knowledge here, so I’d like some advice:
We run a community project providing free WiFi via RUT200 4G routers (low-cost, decent options). Currently, we use IronWifi for our captive portal with a RADIUS server, but I’m not sure it’s necessary. Since we already pay for RMS, I’d like to explore using its Hotspot functionality but need to confirm it meets our requirements.
Setup Summary:
1x RUT200 router per location
Minimal data usage (~100MB/day, some locations more)
RMS-connected (using credits—best option?)
Fair usage limits (currently 15 mins per user, re-login required)
Captive Portal Needs:
Name/email/phone info collected - all as guest login
GIFs/ads displayed on the portal
Success screen after login
Custom portals per location (ideally)
Easy access to guest login data/usage by location/router
To use RMS you can use either credits or packages valid from 3 to 10 years. To read more about RMS and pricing please visit our site: Remote Management System (RMS)
The RUT200 meets your requirements:
You can set up a hotspot on every device that allows open access but requires users to sign up with an email address, phone number, and password. For those users, the Name will be random.
You can customize the landing page, so you are free to add GIFs and ads
Successful login site can also be customized
You can upload your version of sites, it can be different per every location
You can check registered users by navigating to Services > Hotspot > User management > Registered users. There is also User sessions panel that allows you to check user data like Download/Upload
