I'm using the RUT955 to collect GPS information and send it to a server. I've noticed that this works fine when the router has a GSM signal, but if it loses a data connection, it doesnt seem to cache the GPS data points collected in the period it did not have a data connection to the internet. The data appears missing, and on my tracking map I just get a straight line.

Ideally I want it to continue collecting GPS points every n seconds I specify, and if the router does not have a data connection at the time they were collected, I want it to cache them and send them when it does finally get a data connection to the internet. The reason is that I need to collect GSM signal strength data to find low signal geographic areas as a vehicle travels.

I'm using AVL.

Am I doing something wrong?  why would the GPS not continue to collect when the router is not able to reach the IP address I'm forwarding the data to?

As I said when the router has a data connection to the internet, the tracking works fine. I am using gpsgate.

Hello. You will need to set the right rules under the GPS menu.

You need to set the rule for mobile or for wifi connection. Tipically the default rule is set for Mobile connection.

it is set up for mobile connection already.... As i said, when the router loses data connection to the internet, it doesnt retain the collected GPS co-ords and seems to trash them. Then when a signal returns, it starts collecting again.     In the GPS settings, TCP is an option so I'd hope the router would start caching the records until it gets a connection again.

Any ideas?

Can you please confirm what Firmware version you have in your device?

We made this quick test at the office and the device behaved fine. GPS is setup to collect info every 1 second and transmit every 2 seconds.

Unplugged the internet from the device and plugged back again. The 1 line data string is while the connection to internet was stable and the massively packed data strings is all the data collected during the internet unplug. it did sent alll the data stored in memory as soon as it's back online. the it normalize back to 1 line strings once it sends the accumulated data.

Thank you for your help.  I have reduced the number of seconds to collect GPS and it seems to help. I will continue testing. I am using RUT9XX_R_00.06.04.5, kernel 3.18.44 and bootloader 3.0.1


Attached is a screen shot showing an example of a jump in co-ordinates, using a 3 second capture time and 5 second upload.

 

Can I ask two things:

  1. Below you state that the GPS data is buffered in memory, is this within RAM or Flash? Just wondered if the data is lost if the router loses power?
  2. Are the event logs for the router stored in RAM or Flash? Again, if power is lost, and they’re in RAM, the event data would be lost if it had not been extracted.

AVL data is stored in RAM. in case of power loss the data will be lost.

You can store NMEA data in a specific file you choose in the flash, but not AVL data
